How to choose an accountant in Klaipėda: 8 questions before signing a contract
Most people choose an accountant on price or a recommendation. But the real difference only shows after a few months: when a return is late, when you cannot get through on the phone, or when it turns out every extra question costs money. These questions help you judge this in advance.
1. What kind of companies do you work with?
IĮ, MB, UAB, individual activity, VAT payers, companies with employees. It matters that the accountant has experience in your sector: cafés, construction, transport and e-commerce each have their own specifics.
2. What exactly does the price include?
Ask for a written list: number of invoices, number of employees, returns, annual statements, consultations. This way you avoid unexpected extra bills.
3. What are the deadlines for documents?
A good accountant tells you straight away the date by which they need your documents and what they do if they do not receive them.
4. Who is responsible for mistakes?
Ask whether the accountant has professional liability insurance and who pays the fine if a mistake was their fault.
5. Can we work remotely?
Most documents now travel electronically: through a shared folder, e-mail or a bank integration. It is convenient when the accountant is in Klaipėda, but day-to-day work does not require meetings.
6. Which software do you use, and will I see my data?
Ask whether you can get your reports at any time: receivables and payables, the profit and loss statement, VAT.
7. How does communication work?
Who answers questions, how quickly and through which channels. This matters more than it seems at the start.
8. How does the handover work?
If you change accountants, the balances, documents and filing history need to be handed over. Ask whether the new accountant checks the books they take over.
Warning signs
- the price is much lower than others, but the list of services is unclear;
- there is no written contract;
- questions are answered after several days;
- you do not get reports, even when you ask.
Advice from Ana Baranova, director of Patikima buhalterė: “When we take on a new client, we first check their books and tell them what we found. That way we both know from day one where we are starting, and there are no surprises at year-end.”
